October 12, 2012, my first juried art show. Based on my excitement, you’d think the Art Institute of Chicago or the Metropolitan Museum of Art asked to hang my photographs. Instead, I submitted three images to the 10th annual juried art show at the Northbrook Public Library, my local library. Two art critics selected the final pieces, including this Snowy Egret, photographed with a Canon Rebel xsi and 75-300 lens at Oso Bay in Corpus Christi, Texas. I felt like I won the lottery because someone called me an artist.
“Art” according to the Oxford Dictionary is “the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form … primarily for their beauty or emotional power” [Oxford Definition: Artist]
Ever since my first trip to the theater, I hoped to inspire people emotionally in a positive way. So I hope this moment of nature inspires at least one person to feel the awe in nature that inspired me to take the photo. Take a photo of your own and pay that inspiration forward.
P.S. This photo, entitled “Stepping Out,” won one of three People’s Choice awards, which paid for some photography toys. Time to step out and take more pictures.
